EXCERPT: "Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. The don't belong no place. They come to a ranch an' work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake[...] They ain't got nothing to look ahead to [...] With us it ain't like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us" (Steinbeck 13-14). |
MY TESTIMONIAL:
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is undoubtedly an incredible novel, which is why it is still popular today. The book is written in such a way that younger readers would be able to read the novel and still completely comprehend what is happening. Additionally, people with higher reading levels will be able to read the book without a problem and still get satisfaction from the literary merit this book holds. Thus, I would recommend that anyone and everyone read this piece at some point. Originally I choose this book because it was short and easy to read and although it is considered a book of literary merit, it's not written in a way that takes a lot of time to process what has just been said. Another reason I personally enjoyed this book in comparison to other literary pieces was the fact that it actually had a distinct plot that one could follow throughout the duration of the novel. I can definitely see myself reading this book again somewhere down the road. I would give this book a five-star rating because it packs an academic and intuitive punch in just a short amount of pages.
